According to industry sources, although it is expected that the upcoming World Cup in Russia can promote the sales of LCD TVs, the demand for LED backlights for global TV in the second quarter of 2018 did not pick up.
The source said that in May and June this year, LED backlight orders were still opaque. At the same time, as China's LED new packaging capabilities are on the line, there may be oversupply, leading to a drop in prices in the second quarter.
In spite of this, LED packaging companies have expressed that the demand for lighting and fine pixel pitch displays in the field of smart phone camera flash memory and AlGaInP LED is still strong.
China Taiwan LED epitaxial wafers and chip maker Epistar plans to begin production of Mini LED chips for smartphone screen backlighting in the third quarter of 2018. However, 5.5-inch full-HD smart phone panels require 2000-10,000 backlit Mini LEDs, and the total cost of such touch panels is estimated to be 35-40 US dollars. Compared with OLEDs, the competitive advantage is not obvious.
