Five predictions of future offshore wind power
However, not all future wind farms will be zero-subsidized. European offshore wind power has been used for more than a decade to achieve zero subsidies, but for emerging markets, it is not so easy. This is inseparable from the continuous improvement of policies and the high development of the entire industry chain.
Although offshore wind power zero subsidies are already a high probability event, the Dutch government is still considering the implementation of the “Carbon Price Floor”, which imposes additional charges on carbon-emitting energy, and the rate will gradually increase over time (example: In 2019, for every ton of carbon dioxide emitted, an additional 10 euros will be paid; after that, it will rise by 5 euros per year; by 2025, for every ton of carbon dioxide emitted, an additional 40 euros will be paid). Replacing industrial upgrading with administrative fees will greatly promote the development of renewable energy, which is worth learning from all emerging markets.
New application areas
In the application of offshore wind power, long-distance transmission of power to the land grid is no longer the only option, and hydrogen production has been recognized as the most promising direction. Using offshore wind power, hydrogen is produced by electrolysis of water for industrial and heating applications.
In Germany, for example, electricity load is more concentrated in southern Germany, while offshore wind power is concentrated in the north. Hydrogen production solves transmission loss and consumption problems to some extent.
The offshore oil and gas platform is also another release of offshore wind power. The platform will use gas turbines in the production process to emit a large amount of carbon dioxide. If offshore wind energy is used, the oil and gas platform will be supplied nearby, and the emission reduction effect is also a lever.
Island energy supply
On most of the world's islands, in addition to the islands that are rich in geothermal energy, energy is dependent on imports from outside the island, and transportation costs are high. The development of offshore wind power on the island not only makes full use of the island's abundant wind resources, but also provides near-supply and low cost, which is a potential choice in the future.
At the end of last year, the US House of Representatives passed a bill that would help residents of the US and foreign islands, such as Guam and Puerto Rico, use offshore wind energy, build offshore wind farms, provide electricity, enhance energy security, and provide employment and economic growth. .
Not only in the United States, but also in the EU, there are more than 2,200 inhabited islands, most of which still rely on imported fossil energy. The EU Island Clean Energy Program is part of the “European Clean Energy” package, which aims to provide a long-term framework to help residents on the island produce sustainable, low-cost energy. Offshore wind power is a good solution. Program.
The UK will continue to maintain its leading position in the offshore wind power market in the future.
In November last year, The Crown Estate announced the next round of offshore wind power leasing plans, including a large number of new sea areas, the development site of future projects, with a total capacity of 7GW, of which the first eight proposed projects (total) 3.4GW) has met the application standards and can be awarded to developers in 2019.
Along with the rapid growth of British offshore wind power, industry personnel also have a large expansion demand. It is estimated that by 2032, the UK will need 36,000 offshore wind power industry personnel, which is three times more than the current number.
